AddBy: Jim Staton18th Jun 2019 2:01PMThis is Patarau, looking north when one is coming down the West Coast from Westhaven going towards the Kahurangi lighthouse. The building is the farm house of Ned and Myrtle Richards and the date is thought to be late 1930's. The flat in front (with the nikau palms) is the 14 acre reserve surveyed off when Taitapu Estates sold their coastal blocks. Prouse and Saunders had their flax mill on three acres of the reserve here in the early 1900's, and Jack and Edwin Richards took up the remaining 11 acres for farming. The photo was most likely taken from Jack Richards house looking inland. Although you cannot see it, there is a Patarau Hall on the reserve (around to the left) built by Geordie Morrice. The river was bridged c1932. This Information is from Bob Dickson, Buller District Manager, Department of Conservation, who worked in the area in the NZ Forest Service days. Jim Staton
