DescriptionA linen backed printed certificate awarded for the 1865 exhibition.History / BiographyThe New Zealand Exhibition, held in Dunedin in 1865, began as a small display of industrial products, which was part of a fund-raising campaign for an Anglican Church. So much enthusiasm was generated however that a plan was put into action to hold a national display of New Zealand's various resources. A site in Great King Street was secured and on 12 January 1865 the first New Zealand Exhibition was opened. Each province was represented as were Britain, Canada and Australia. During the 102 days the Exhibition was open over 31,000 people passed through the gates. (From "City of Dunedin: a Century of Civic Enterprise" by K.C.
