By: Jim Staton5th Nov 2019 3:15PMDavidsons Foundry built 26 (known) bush tramway locomotives, they were used mainly on the West Coast of the South Island, but several went to the upper north Island and were a slow, but economical alternative to imported locomotives, they generally gave good service, apart from the chain drive which frequently broke. The photo is one of the earlier locos built, the outside gear was moved inside the frame and the cylinders placed in a more conventional position on later models. See Paul Mahoney's Bush trams of New Zealand for a definitive history of these, and all the other bush locos used in New Zealand.
