Whāia te mātauranga:
Māori and Pacific alumni of the College of Education
In 2026, Te Kura Ākau Taitoka – the University of Otago College of Education (UOCE) celebrates 150 years of initial teacher education (ITE) programmes. Ōtepoti was the first place in New Zealand to offer formal teaching qualifications, so this is a historic milestone. The theme of 150th celebration, ‘Hoki whakamuri kia anga whakamua’, can be translated as ‘Look to the past in order to forge the future’. With this in mind, the College wanted to create a digital archive to foreground and celebrate Māori and Pacific alumni of Dunedin-and Invercargill-based ITE programmes who went on to become education leaders. The archive captures alumni memories of studying to become teachers, reflections on their careers to date, advice for current students, and aspirations for teacher education and education more broadly.
