She was born Ruth Mumford in Invercargill on 29 September 1919 and received her secondary education at Southland Technical College. Her writing career began in her youth with many contributions to the 'Little Pakehas' pages in the 'Southland Daily News'. Her poems appeared in the 'Southland Times', 'New Zealand Listener' and 'Landfall' from the late 1940s. She adopted Dallas as a pen name in honour of her maternal grandmother. Her first collection, 'Country Road and other Poems, 1947-1952', was published by Caxton Press in 1953.
