She was born in Palmerston on 11 May 1960. Her parents farmed at Waikouaiti, where her grandfather had run the Kerr and Company drapery business. Elizabeth was educated at Waikouaiti School and Waitaki Girls' High School. She graduated with a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Auckland in 1990. She was a lecturer at the University of Otago School of Consumer and Applied Sciences from 1991 to 1994. She was administrator of the 'What If? Dunedin' blog, now archived by the National Library of New Zealand. Elizabeth Kerr died in Dunedin on 18 August 2017.
