Faulkner Limited was a Dunedin engineering business, specialising in cast and wrought ironwork and the manufacture of bedsteads, hospital furniture, and lift cars.
The company founder, James William Faulkner, was born in Chertsey, Surrey, England, in 1852. In the mid-1880s he was a wireworker in North East Valley, Dunedin, and in 1888 he moved to premises in Cumberland Street. He was later joined in the business by his sons, James and William Faulkner.
From 1893 the business was known as J.W. Faulkner and Sons and advertised as 'engineers and ironfounders, wire-weavers and general galvanisers'. At this time it was particularly known for its ornamental gates, railings, and verandah castings. From 1897 the company was styled as J. & W. Faulkner. It moved to a site at the corner of St Andrew and Castle streets in 1902. J.W. Faulkner died in 1913.
Hospital furniture and equipment became a major line of work, and the company won a gold medal for hospital beds and furniture at the 1925-1926 New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. A four storey factory addition was completed in 1930.
In 1934 Faulkners became a limited liability company with the Faulkner brothers and Thomas Marlowe as directors. Marlowe became manager in 1935, and was later managing director.
J. & W. Faulkner was taken over by Sharland and Company and closed in September 1987.
