He wrote newspaper columns and reviews and books on various subjects, and also broadcast regularly on the radio. He was involved in various community organisations and was a Presbyterian lay preacher. He died in 1996, aged 59 years. Charles Croot married Louise van Raalte in 1962. Louise Croot, also a teacher, went on to work in health promotion for the district office of the Department of Health (later absorbed into the Otago Area Health Board) for many years. She also completed some consultancy work in China for the World Health Organisation, and was involved in the establishment of the Dunedin-Shanghai sister city relationship. She is involved in various organisations, including Rural Women New Zealand, the Southern Heritage Trust, Community Trust of Otago, and the Federation of University Women (for which she was international president 2007-2010). She was on the University of Otago Council for some years, was deputy-chair of the Otago Hospital Board, and was a long-serving member of the Otago Regional Council.
