He was a grandson of Tame Parata. After involvement with the Young Maori Party he decided to enter the Anglican Church. He was ordained deacon in 1907 and priest in 1908 and received his training at Te Aute College and the Selwyn Theological College, Dunedin. He served as assistant curate at St Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin and from 1911 travelled extensively before being appointed curate at St Mark's, Kennington. He returned to New Zealand at the outbreak of World War I and became a vicar at Riverton until 1917, when he became chaplain to the Maori Contingent in France. Afterwards he became vicar of Gore, was made a canon of the Cathedral and represented the Diocese on General Synod, the first Māori priest to do so.
