He migrated to New Zealand in 1949, initally working for the New Zealand Forest Service. He later settled in Gore where he was a property investor and landlord. Lowe was a tramper, and was involved with expeditions to Antarctica in 1969-1970, 1972, and 1975-1976. He was a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club and the Hokonui Tramping Club.
In later life Lowe became a wine expert, gaining a certificate from the Wine Institute of New Zealand. He was instrumental in establishing the Gore Winetasters' Club in 1984, and wrote and lectured on the subject. He was awarded the Polar Medal in May 1973.
Harold Lowe married Joan Speden in 1975. He died on 28 February 2017.
