Reference NumberEph-Gp-0181Date[1984-2022?]History / BiographyRadio One (91FM) began broadcasting on 20 February 1984 from a studio in the Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) building, and with an aerial at the top of the Hocken building (now known as the Richardson building). The initial studio conversion and equipment purchase was funded by the OUSA and local business advertising. With Graham Cockroft as station manager, Radio One began broadcasting 85 hours per week for three blocks of four weeks during Orientation and Capping, and for a "town and gown" themed period 28 May-24 June. The station was run by, and designed for, tertiary students with student-focused information and news, and an emphasis on local Dunedin and New Zealand music and performing arts.
Broadcasting hours soon extended to cover the academic year. In 1987 the station moved to new offices in an OUSA building annex and its broadcasting range expanded with the removal of its transmitter to Mt Cargill. By 1992 Radio One was on air 24 hours per day all year round with six full-time staff members supported by part-time and voluntary staff. In 1995 Planet Media Dunedin Ltd, a subsidiary of the OUSA, took over the management of Radio One. Thanks to hundreds of opposing submissions the station avoided being sold in 2011 when the OUSA, in anticipation of a loss of income from the introduction of the Voluntary Student Membership Bill, commissioned a review of its assets.
