Moultray was born on the 6th of August 1863 at Edinburgh. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 in the company of his brother Henry and his parents, Mary Elder and James Douglas Moultray. Moultray specialised in painting New Zealand historical scenes. He often travelled to the locations of the events depicted in his paintings, taking photographs and conducting interviews to inform his work. He travelled to South Africa at the end of 1899, spending five months as a war artist and correspondent for various newspapers, before being invalided home to New Zealand. He exhibited regularly with the Otago Art Society until 1916. John Elder Moultray died at Dunedin in 1922.
