Reference NumberEph-Gp-0107Date1958-[2016]CreatorNew Zealand University Students' AssociationHistory / BiographyIn 1935 the New Zealand National Union of Students, formed in 1929, was renamed the New Zealand University Students' Association (NZUSA) with constituent membership from Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury, and Otago university students' associations. They were soon joined by associations from Massey, Lincoln (in 1937) and later Waikato (in 1965). Membership of the NZUSA was linked to the payment of any of these students' association fees, and the national office was always based in Wellington.
By 1979 there were three standing committees of the association: the National Education Action Committee, National Overseas Students Action Committee, and Women's Rights Action Committee, and a commercial travel wing operating as the Student Travel Bureau.
In 1979 the constitution of the NZUSA stated that its objectives were: "to function as a major informed and principled pressure group including education (as first priority), student welfare and social reform (including international matters) among its areas of concern". The association has been active in many areas including the improvement of student health care in the 1950s, opposition to the Vietnam War, South Africa's apartheid system, and New Zealand Security Service operations, and support for homosexual law reform and a non-racist immigration policy.
Education is the primary concern of the association, and it has continuously advocated for "a fairer and more equitable high quality tertiary education system" with a focus on student bursaries, fees, allowances, and loans, as well as teaching quality, and support for the tertiary education sector.
In 2006 the association became known as the New Zealand Union of Students' Associations "to better reflect its membership and desire to be a national voice for all tertiary students in New Zealand."
