DescriptionA poster protesting South African apartheid laws.History / BiographyThe Halt All Racist Tours movement (HART) was formed on 15 July 1969 at a meeting convened by the Auckland University Students' Association to oppose the proposed All Black tour of South Africa in 1970. Trevor Richards was elected acting chairman and served as the organisation's chair until 1980. HART campaigned against all sporting ties, and eventually all contact, with apartheid South Africa. In August 1980 HART and the National Anti-Apartheid Committee merged to become HART: the New Zealand anti-apartheid movement with Pauline McKay as national chairperson and John Minto as national organiser. In 1981 HART organised nationwide protests against the tour of New Zealand by the South African rugby team, and, although the tour went ahead, there were no further matches between the All Blacks and Springboks until after apartheid ended in South Africa in the early 1990s. In November 1992 HART made the formal decision to disband.
