DescriptionThe Estate of Keith and Knola Jeffery donated over 100 historical maps and cartographic references to Te Uare Taoka o Hākena Hocken Collections between 2017 and 2020. This collection contains a wide range of material depicting locations in Aotearoa New Zealand, Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (Oceania / Pacific Ocean) and other global regions, ranging from late-16th-century pictorial charts to maps that appeared in early-20th-century atlases.History / BiographyKeith Jeffery was born in Milton, the second son of Bill Jeffery, a stock and station agent, and his wife Reta. The family moved to Andersons Bay in Dunedin when Keith was an infant. He attended Andersons Bay Primary School before moving to King's High School, where he was a prefect and played rugby as a loose forward in the First XV.
Keith won a place at the Otago Medical School and graduated in 1958, subsequently working in Dunedin Hospital as a house surgeon. He met Knola Greenwood, a recent nursing graduate, in the operating theatre, and they married one year later.
After Keith became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK) in 1965, the family spent several years abroad before returning to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1968. In 1982, he succeeded Alan Alldred as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Otago Medical School. Later, in 2003, Keith became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Orthopaedic Surgery.
In retirement Keith energetically pursued an interest in the history of the Dunedin Hospital and the School of Medicine. He also had a keen interest in historical maps and over the years built up an important collection, which came to Te Uare Taoka o Hākena Hocken Collections in line with his family's wishes.
