DescriptionA poster depicting the location of nuclear weapon free zones in New Zealand as at 1 June 1984.History / BiographyThe New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee was founded by Larry Ross at a public meeting in Christchurch on 7 December 1981. Its objectives were: "(1) a nuclear free zone with a foreign policy based on neutrality and international peacemaking for New Zealand; (2) a South Pacific nuclear weapon free zone; (3) to assist other groups and states to become neutral peacemaking nuclear weapon free zones; (4) to help prevent nuclear holocaust and promote international peace, co-operation, justice and support for the United Nations."
By 1984 94 local councils had declared their towns, cities, or counties nuclear free zones, and represented over 60% of the population. At the 1984 general election the Labour Party successfully campaigned with the promise of nuclear free legislation. In 1987 the Labour Government passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act.
In 1988 the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee became the New Zealand Nuclear Free Peacemaking Association.
