Reference NumberEph-Gp-0069Date1969-2022History / BiographyIt was not until the 1960s that a planned week of activities at the beginning of the academic year, organised by the Otago University Students' Association, to welcome new students to the University of Otago became an annual event. Prior to this, orientation activities were limited to social events, such as dances or 'hops', run by student clubs and to initiation rituals at residential colleges. Orientation week activities gradually incorporated a wide range of activities including film screenings, debates, suppers, lectures, club displays, market days, student forums, dramatic productions and dances, as well as an official welcome by the Vice-Chancellor. Music performances by local and international bands became a prominent feature from the 1970s with acts being part of a New Zealand Students' Arts Council organised circuit of New Zealand universities. In 1991 a toga party for freshers was incorporated into the week's activities, with a George Street parade added in 2001, however this was curtailed after 2009's event caused injuries, littering and damage to public property.
In 1994 the academic year was organised into two semesters and from 2002 the OUSA also began organising 'Reorientation' events for the beginning of the second semester. A formal convocation ceremony involving the Vice-Chancellor, local iwi and dignitaries was introduced in 2012.
