Reference NumberP1978-010DescriptionMounted photographs of J.R. Brown's bakery in Dunedin. They include views of the first premises at Marion Street (now Thorn Street), Caversham when deliveries began with two carts. Mostly the photographs relate to the second, larger premises on Cargill Road (now Hillside Road) and include interiors of the dough room, bakehouse, staff, electric ovens and fleet of carts and vans.History / BiographyJ.R. Brown began his career as a traveller for J. Rattray & Son Ltd., Merchants. On his first visit to Latham's Bakery in Caversham, he was told that Mr Latham wanted only to sell, not buy. With a promise of 300 pounds from his mother, Brown arranged to buy the business. The management of Rattrays cooperated by giving him a wide variety of experience and 18 months later, in 1917, he took over.
The business began with two carts. Four more were added later and deliveries made as far as North East Valley and Roslyn. In 1927 the business moved to larger premises on the corner of Cargill Road (now Hillside Road) and Surrey Street. By the time Brown sold his business in 1938, he had a fleet of five cars and five vans with deliveries extending as far afield as Milton.
Brown introduced mechanization in the late 1920s and was one of the first bakers to sell wrapped bread. His garden frontage on Hillside Road was also an innovation, modelled on the Edmond's factory in Christchurch.Publisherdd J.R. Brown, Christchurch, 1978
