An engineer, he worked on railways projects under Isambard Kingdom Brunel from 1847 to 1856 and was later Engineer to the Madras Railway Company. He came to New Zealand in 1873 and lived mostly in retirement in Christchurch (from obituary, Star [Christchurch], 25 September 1894, p.1). One of Hardy-Johnston's daughters, Emma Charlotte Lena Hardy-Johnston, married Dunedin businessman Edward George Turnbull Thomas. Another, Alice Louisa Hardy-Johnston, married Trevor Grant (later the fourth Baron Strathspey).
