It covers his time at Gallipoli from September to November 1915, when he was evacuated due to illness. The diary ends in December 1915, by which time he was in Egypt. In addition to the fragile original diary, there is a typed transcript made by Gill Robinson. The collection also includes notes and biographical information compiled by Evan Sherrard.

Information about other items can be found on the Hākena catalogue, through the Library Catalogues link above.History / BiographyWilliam McAra was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and migrated to New Zealand with his family in 1877, aged 2 years. His father was Presbyterian minister at Kaikoura. McAra studied medicine at the University of Otago, graduating in 1902. In 1903 he set up a medical practice in Gore, and married Gertrude Stewart, a nurse. In June 1915 Major William McAra of the New Zealand Medical Corps left New Zealand with the 5th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, arriving at Gallipoli in September 1915. Following the war he returned to medical practice in Gore, until ill health forced his retirement. He died in 1934.
