Roberts attended Arthur Street School and Otago Boys' High School. He later served in World War I, number 3/1681. He was a member of A. Section No.3 New Zealand Rifle Brigade Field Ambulance. After being invalided home, Roberts became an orchardist at Alexandra about 1920 to 1940. He then moved to Nelson and continued his interest in writing and painting. Roberts died in 1945 and is buried in the Dunedin Southern Cemetery.
