The first diary (22 September 1914 - 17 September 1915) covers Cargill's voyage, via Colombo, to Egypt and his unit's activities there. It includes a photo postcard of the 'Hawkes Bay' loaded with troops in Port Chalmers and a separate note by O.L. Ferens, dated 9 June 1965, stating that the diaries had been sent to him by Mr A.W. Cargill of Timaru, who was in his 80th year. The second diary (8 November 1915 - 20 December 1915) covers Cargill's service in Gallipoli until the end of the campaign. This diary includes photographs of Sidi Bishr Camp in Alexandria, Egypt and drawings of entrenchments in Gallipoli.
