A Methodist minister, he worked at Taranaki, Auckland, Wairarapa, West Coast, and Dunedin (from 1919). He married Elizabeth Eskett (1866-1954), a New Zealander, in 1891. They had four children: one boy and three girls.
Sydney (1892-1915), was killed at Gallipoli.
Linda (1894-1970) married Victor Jones and settled in Invercargill.
Bertha (1896-1945) studied at the University of Otago and gained a Master of Arts degree. She was a member of staff of Otago Girls' High School and John McGlashan College before becoming a lecturer in the English Department of the University of Otago. She married John Conly in 1927 and later lived in Masterton.
Grace (1899-1987) gained an LTCL music diploma and became a teacher of piano and harmony. She married James Allanson Howden and lived most of her life in Dunedin.
