Around 1987 she began performing as a beat poet, later together with a barroom punk/fusion band called the Undertakers. In 1991 she performed in Amsterdam and Ireland during a brief overseas tour. She also performed at University of Otago orientation events. In 1993 she published 'The Essential Gaylene', a printed and audio collection of her work, of which most widely known poem is 'Dunedin'. Gaylene has also worked as a music reviewer and interviewer.
