Brown was born in Auckland in 1933 and graduated from Otago University with Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1956 and Doctor of Dental Science in 1973. He taught at the University of Otago's Dental School from 1970 and retired in 1993 as Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Community Dental Health and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry. Harvey Brown has had a lengthy association with the New Zealand Dental Journal, first as assistant editor then later editor, until 2002

Pickerill, a pioneer of plastic surgery, was born in Birmingham, England in 1879 and, after graduating from Birmingham University, emigrated to New Zealand with his family, to take up appointment as the first Director of the University of Otago Dental School in 1907. Pickerill became one of the first recognised plastic surgeons when he served at Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, dealing with injuries received in the trenches of World War I. He was awarded the O.B.E. (Military) in 1919 and C.B.E. in 1923. In 1927 he took up the post of senior plastic surgeon at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. He married his second wife, Cecily Clarkson in 1934, and in 1939 Cecily and H.P. Pickerill established the Bassam Hospital in Lower Hutt operating, for the most part, on infant cleft palate and lip reconstuctive surgery. Henry Pickerill was a prolific researcher and continued his research and writing in his retirement. He died in 1956.
