There are rules, minutes, correspondence, financial records, membership records, programmes of society concerts, and photographs. Two nineteenth century scrapbooks include newspaper clippings and programmes, some of them relating to musical events not involving the society.

It went into recess in 1888 and was re-established under the same name in 1897. In 1967 it joined with the University Music Union Choir to become Schola Cantorum of Dunedin. From 1993 it performed as the City of Dunedin Choir. At the end of 2012 its performing name was changed again, to City Choir Dunedin. The legal name has remained the Dunedin Choral Society Inc. The society puts on several public performances each year. In 1925-1926, it took a prominent part in the musical activities at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition.
