Maude was born in Nelson in 1868. She worked in her father's drapery store until she married James in 1904. She moved to Bannockburn where James had been operating the general store since 1883. The couple had three sons and operated the store until 1916. James was also the local butcher, baker, gold dealer and dentist. He was also active in local politics and was on the Vincent County Council for 15 years. He was Member of Parliament for Wakatipu from 1919 to 1928. Known in the district as the 'grandfather' of gold dredging, James also founded the Electric Gold Dredging Company.
