There is a substantial collection of letters written by David Dewar to his parents and brothers while serving overseas, and one letter from George Dewar, written while a prisoner of war. There is also a note by the brothers' niece about the contents of the papers.

Two of the sons of Thomas and Elizabeth Dewar served in World War I, while a third son, Jim, was partially crippled. David Dewar served with the 16th Waikato Company of the 1st AIB [Auckland Infantry Battalion?]. He was killed in action in France on 1 October 1918. George Dewar served with C Company, 3rd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was taken prisoner of war in Germany but returned home safely.
