He briefly worked for the City Council in Sydney before studying at the First Atelier of Architecture in London from 1913. By the end of 1915 he had returned to Dunedin where he became a partner in the firm MacFie and Hood. He was later in the partnership Macfie and Dunning, and in sole practice.
