There are diaries, photographs and other records relating to goldmining at Kyeburn and Central Otago. Christian's army papers include a diary of his time with the New Zealand Expeditionary force in Egypt, 1916 and 1918, photographs, army documents and publications including John Fitzgerald Quill's service and ration books and certificate of discharge. The collection also includes army training material for the 1940s and circulars and memoranda for the Home Guard Group 11B, Queenstown. The photographs include family portraits.

His occupation before the war is listed as 'manufacturer' on his military record. There is some evidence to suggest that he was involved in manufacturing cheese, both with his own company, and in association with the Dunedin firm of Taylor. Christian appears to have served in various military units in Southland after the outbreak of World War I, later being posted to Wellington. In 1916 he was sent to Egypt as a Lieutenant in D Company, Otago Infantry, 9th reinforcements. He was sent to France, but also served at the New Zealand Discharge Depot for invalid soldiers at Torquay, Devon. After the war he was a gold-miner at the Kyeburn Diggings, Central Otago, and served in the Home Guard during World War II.
