He arrived in Port Chalmers on the 'Mooltan' on Christmas day 1849, and settled at Inch Clutha. Pillans was a member of the Legislative Council, 1863-1873, but retired to concentrate on farming and rearing trout for release in local rivers. As a skilled artist he recorded his surroundings. He died on 12 December 1889.
