Accompanying the letter was an unsourced enclosure showing Beaumont wearing a life jacket designed by his mother Orpheus Beaumont. Orpheus designed the first mass produced lifejacket, the 'Salvus' in 1917, which became standard issue for the Union Steamship Company and the British fleet until the Second World War. Also included in this collection is a tobacco jar, inscribed 'Capt. Norman Beaumont from Sergt. Llewellyn Beaumont, Main Body, No. 12 Battery. 3rd N.Z. Field Artillery Brigade, O.A.S., France'.

Norman and Orpheus (nee Newman) Beaumont. Educated in Auckland, and at Kaikorai and Maori Hill Schools, Dunedin, he volunteered for military service (N.Z.E.F. number 2/389) the day war was declared. He served in the No. 12 Battery of the 3rd New Zealand Artillery Brigade. He was in action at Gallipoli and on the Western Front in France before being invalided back to New Zealand when a sergeant in the New Zealand Artillery. He married Clare Rutherford Matheson in 1924 and had a son, well known Dunedin photographer Matheson Beaumont. The letter on wood was sent by Llewellyn to his sister Connie (Constance Dorothy Ann) Beaumont, who later married Dr Gerald Fitzgerald. They had three sons: Beaumont, Gerald and Norman.
