Established in 1887, the Dunedin part of the business was formed into a private liability company, Wardells (Dunedin) Limited, in 1935. In addition to its George Street store, the company opened food markets in South Dunedin (1965) and Kaikorai Valley (1974). Its home delivery service ended in 1972.
