It was the first school in Otago, established in 1848, and sited on the Dunedin foreshore. In 1864 the school was shifted to the corner of Tennyson Street and York Place where it was known as the Middle District School. The school moved to Arthur Street in 1877. The school was rebuilt on this site in the 1960s.
