He graduated from the New Zealand Library School in 1951 and his first position was at the Auckland Institute and Museum Library, where he was briefly Acting Librarian from 1951 to 1952. From 1954, he was at the Alexander Turnbull Library, becoming Acting Chief Librarian in 1964.
