By 1887 the number had increased to such an extent that Hanover Street took over the work as a branch station. As well as Sunday School, regular Sunday evening services were held. In 1889 steps were taken to have new church built and the first service was conducted in it in March 1892. In February 1897, a meeting of church members was held and it was resolved to 'sever from Hanover Street, and form a separate Church in the Kaikorai'. The first minister was Rev. Alfred North, who was brought out from England to take up his duties.
The church was moved to Stuart Street c.1909 and enlarged. A new church was built in Highgate.
