They include minutes (1874-1962), outwards letter books (1873-1926), correspondence files and registers (1897-1977), a large range of financial papers (1875-1973) including ledgers, cashbooks and analysis books recording expenditure and income from sources such as fees, grants, trusts, rents, boarders, salaries and office incidentals, teachers salary sheets and voucher books. There are also records relating to land leases (1878-1960), including rent books, debenture interest books and land lease agreements. Other material includes school prospectuses, honour lists and magazines (1863-1978), papers relating to the Otago Boys' High School Old Boys' Association, clipping books (1895-1974), photographs (c.1885-1961), glass negatives, and plans (1860-1938).

The board remained the governing authority until the education changes of 1989, also taking responsibility for King's High School and Queen's High School.
