The project was initiated by Professor Erik Olssen and Dr Tom Brooking of the Department of History in the mid-1970s. It built up a large database of information on adults living in the study area, forming one of the largest social history projects in the world. The study area, the largest industrial district in New Zealand in its day, was selected for the study of the development of modern New Zealand urban society. The first phase of the project - 'Urban society and the opportunity structure' - investigated social and geographical mobility. The second phase - 'Space, time, gender and the urban opportunity structure', later renamed 'sites of gender' - examined gender and social structure.
The project received funding from the University of Otago, and, from 1995 to 2002, major grants from the Foundation of Research, Science and Technology. Related publications continued to be produced after the project ceased being active.
