He arrived in New Zealand in 1946 when he was appointed Dean of the Dental School, a position he held until retiring in 1972. He invented the first working air-turbine high speed dental drill that paved the way for modern drills, was awarded the Queen's coronation medal in 1953 and knighted for services to dentistry in 1960.
