The letters relate to the 1913-1918 Canadian Artic Expedition, led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, with Diamond Jenness as chief ethnologist.

He attended Oxford University graduating with an MA. After his mother's death he left Britain for a chair at Victoria College, Wellington, and contributed greatly to the life of the college as the first professor of modern languages. With the outbreak of World War I, von Zedlitz was forced out of his position by government legislation. He was eventually reappointed as an emeritus professor in 1936. He died in Lower Hutt in 1949
