Wohlers met the great southern chief Tuhawaiki on Banks Peninsula and was invited by him to make Ruapuke in the Foveaux Strait, his headquarters for mission work. Wohlers arrived on Ruapuke Island 17 May 1844. He married Eliza Palmer on 21 September 1849, and they had one daughter Gretchen. Aside from establishing a mission at Ruapuke he was the visiting pastor to Stewart Island, and chairman of the first Committee of Management of Ruapuke School, where he also taught prior to his death.
