It was the second school to be established in Dunedin and opened with a roll of 31. With the establishment of the Otago Education Board in 1856, the first state school was opened in North East Valley in 1858 on the present school site. Due to increasing rolls, another school was built on the site a few years later and used until 1882. In 1882 the stone school was built and comprised five classrooms catering for a roll on 329. This was demolished in 1968. In April 1968 the school joined many others in the Dunedin area in becoming a Normal school, thus beginning a close relationship with the Dunedin College of Education.
