Some scripts include several different versions as Lord made many alterations to his work (occasionally there are duplicates which were donated with different parts of the collection). There are also some personal papers, diaries, correspondence, financial records and photographs. There are scrapbooks, some possibly collated by Lord's family, with newspaper clippings, programmes and photographs relating to his career. There are many programmes and posters for performances of Lord's plays. The collection also includes papers of G.J. Garland, Lord's great grandfather, including an autobiography which focuses on his life in colonial Auckland, and his research on New Zealand birds. There are plays by other authors, including G. Stuart Garland and contributors to a Dunedin Playwrights' Workshop organised by Lord. Miscellaneous items include a collection of 1930s love letters, Lord's typewriter, and various other items.

He was born in Rotorua in 1945 and grew up in Hamilton and Invercargill. He completed a BA at Victoria University and trained to be a teacher. In 1969 he won the Katherine Mansfield Young Writers' Award. In 1971 his first full length play ('It isn't cricket') premiered at Downstage Theatre, Wellington. His plays have been performed in New Zealand and in the United States, Canada, England and Australia. He has also written for film and television. Among his best known works are 'Well hung', 'Bert and Maisy' (later made into a television series) and 'Joyful and triumphant'. He was Burns Fellow at the University of Otago in 1987. He died in Dunedin in 1992, leaving his house in trust for other writers.
