It was initially established as a firm of warehousemen in 1862, with the Roslyn Woollen Mill being built in Kaikorai Valley in 1879. The company expanded to include a nationwide network of warehouse and clothing manufacture facilities. In Dunedin, a clothing factory was established in 1881, a hat factory in 1901, footwear in 1908 and neckwear in 1957. The company was taken over by UEB (United Empire Box) Industries in 1966 and the Roslyn Woollen Mill was acquired by rival Mosgiel Woollens in 1969.
