Helene died when Charles was very young and he was brought up by his father. He attended Waitaki Boys High School and from there went on to St John's College, Oxford, where he read modern history. After this period, he continued to spend many years in England, Europe and the Middle East, where he wrote poetry, taught and took part in archaeological excavations. In 1947 he returned to Dunedin and founded the literary quarterly 'Landfall' which he edited for its first twenty years, until 1966. While chiefly a literary enterprise, 'Landfall' also included critical comment and a representation of current work in the visual arts.
The aims of 'Landfall' were supported by Denis Glover and the Caxton Press, who published 'Landfall' and also six collections of Brasch's poetry: 'The Land and the People' (1939), 'Disputed Ground' (1948), The Estate and Other Poems' (1957), 'Ambulando' (1964), 'Not Far Off' (1969) and 'Home Ground' (1974).
As well as his 'Landfall' work, Brasch served on numerous arts committees and was one of the most generous benefactors of the arts in New Zealand, and especially of Dunedin's libraries, art galleries and museums. Brasch died in Dunedin in 1973.
