As well as the records of Union Street school this collection contains the records of Normal School, Albany Street School, and Leith Valley School.
The Normal School opened in 1876 in Moray Place and was the first Normal School and Teachers Training College in New Zealand. It appears that in 1909 the Otago Education Board moved the normal classes of the Normal School in Moray Place to the Union Street School which then became renamed the Union Street Normal School. The Normal School was renamed Moray Place School. In 1934 Albany Street Associated Normal School was consolidated on Union Street Normal School. In 1949 Union Street Normal School was closed due to the dangerous state of the building and the majority of the children were transferred to George Street School. George Street School became George Street Normal School in 1950.
