Information about other items can be found on the Hākena catalogue, through the Library Catalogues link above.History / BiographyJames McNeur emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 1859 and in 1872 married Margaret Hunter. George McNeur was born in 1874. Bought up in a strict Presbyterian family, he trained as a missionary, first travelling to China in 1901. In 1903 he married Margaret Sinclair, who was also interested in the Chinese mission. In January 1907 their only child, Jean, was born in Canton. In 1916 Jean was sent to school in Cheefoo and in 1920 studied at Teachers Training College in New Zealand and later gained her MA from the University of Otago. George and Margaret returned to New Zealand in 1927 as George was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. They later returned to Canton but retired in 1939, after Canton fell to the Japanese army. George died in 1953 and Margaret in 1958.
In 1931 Jean returned to China as a trainee missionary. In 1936 she married fellow missionary Dr Samuel Moore (Mooi). The couple spent time in Hong Kong and Ireland where Margaret, the first of their three children, was born in 1938. They returned to Hong Kong and in 1944 travelled to India. In 1947 they returned to Hong Kong and were especially involved with people suffering from drug addiction. Samuel died in 1969 and Jean returned to Auckland. Margaret, who had been teaching in Hong Kong, also returned to Auckland to teach.
