Voyage 1, where Bayly was an apprentice, is the voyage of the Almorah which sailed from Cork to Sydney with female convicts. The ship was seized by H.M.S. Slaney on a charge of smuggling tea but Bayly was discharged.
Voyage 2 describes the journey from Sydney to Valparaiso on board the Calder, Bayly was 3rd Mate. The ship was wrecked at anchor.
Voyage 3, on the St Patrick, began at Valparaiso and went to Tahiti, New Zealand and Calcutta.
Voyage 4, on the Hooghly, covered Calcutta to London, while voyage 5 on the Prince Regent was due to sail from London to Madras and Calcutta. However storms saw the ship pull into Sierra Leone for repairs.
Voyage 6 and Bayly was once again on board the Hooghly, this time as second officer. They sailed from London to Western Australia with 180 emigrants. On the return voyage, the ship pulled into Singapore for repairs and then travelled via St Helena to London. Bayly was then invalided for two years in London with a sprained back.
Voyage 7 saw Bayly as Chief Officer of the Hooghly which sailed from London to Calcutta via Madras with East India Company personnel, and returned again to London in 1833.
By voyage 8 Bayly was Captain and part owner of the Hooghly and in 1834 departed for New South Wales with male convicts and the 50th Regiment. They returned to London via Java and China although the journal for the latter part of the voyage is missing.
Voyage 9, with his brother Matthew Bayly as Apprentice Officer, sailed for Sydney with emigrants on board. They returned to London via Calcutta, Mauritius, Calcutta, Ceylon, Burma and St Helena.
The second journal describes the last two voyages on board the Hooghly with Bayly as Captain and full owner. In 1839 they travelled to South Australia with emigrants. They returned to London via Calcutta, Mauritius and China.
Voyage 11 saw Bayly leave London for Calcutta with troops in 1842. From Calcutta they sailed to Western Australia, Van Diemen's Land, Port Phillip and South Australia. From there the ship went to Adelaide, Mauritius and Ceylon, where Bayly visited his brother's coffee plantation. Bayly returned to London in 1844 whereupon he sold the Hooghly and purchased the Kallibooka.
Loose within volume 2 are some newspaper cuttings and an 11 page manuscript entitled "Ship on fire - rescue of the crew' which recounts the rescue in May 1846 of the crew of the William Rathbone by the Agincourt.
