Educated at Kaikorai School, Otago Boys' High School, and the University of Otago, he undertook his apprenticeship at J. Sparrow & Sons. He gained the qualifications of A.M.I.C.E., A.M.I.Mech.E., and M.N.Z.I.E. He was also a registered surveyor.
