He served with the New Zealand Field Ambulance at Gallipoli. A photograph he took of Private Richard A. Henderson of the New Zealand Field Ambulance carrying a wounded man from the battlefield with the aid of a donkey was the model for the painting by Sapper Horace Moore-Jones known as 'Simpson and His Donkey'.
